Where Central Booking Releases Go
Central Booking is the centralized intake point for arrests made by Johnson County law-enforcement agencies. It is not a separate correctional jurisdiction from New Century. Some people complete a fast booking-and-release process after bond, recognizance, or another court action. Others are classified and moved to New Century Adult Detention Center. A person can also leave Sheriff custody through a handoff to another county, the Kansas Department of Corrections, federal authorities, or immigration custody.
The official Booking and Release Report is the best first public record because its Released section provides a release date and time, type, and location. Read all three fields together. A recorded exit confirms the end of that booking’s physical stay at the Sheriff facility. It does not always mean the person entered the community. A transfer ends county physical custody while custody continues elsewhere.
Bond and recognizance usually point toward community release under court-set terms, but the booking row remains the event evidence. A bond figure or court order alone is not a door-out time. Sentence completion may be followed by supervision or another case. If the location or type suggests transfer, identify the receiving system before drawing a conclusion.
Confirm a Central Booking Release
The public report has an approximate four-hour delay, so a new event may not appear at once. Use a layered check and keep the booking identity tied to each result.
- Open the Booking and Release Report and inspect the Released portion of the Last 24 Hours view.
- Match more than the name when the record supplies a booking number, date, or other useful identifier.
- Read the release time, type, and location as one event.
- For an older event, choose the relevant dated report or use the Sheriff Inmate Search with “Show Previous Booking History.”
- Call Central Booking when the event is fresh, delayed, or unclear.
- Pair the Sheriff event with the court order when the legal basis matters.

Central Records accepts requests in person, by email, or by mail. Its phone is 913-715-5460 and its email is SHR-Recordrequests@jocogov.org. The office is in the Sheriff’s Operations Building at 27747 W. 159th Street, New Century, and lists weekday hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding holidays. Ask the records office, rather than the front-line facility, for a copy of an existing booking and release record.
Central Booking Facility Role
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office operates Central Booking as the shared intake and pre-classification point for agencies across the county. The Sheriff reports that the original Olathe facility opened in 1988. After New Century opened and the detention system changed, the Olathe location reopened as centralized booking in 2012.
This role explains why a rapid exit and an internal move can both begin at the same desk. A name can disappear from a Central Booking context because a person bonded out, received another lawful release, or moved deeper into the county system. New Century is the Sheriff’s principal adult detention facility. The two buildings are parts of one detention bureau, so the same county report records their booking and release events.
Central Booking Release Fields
Johnson County’s released entry is more useful than a bare roster deletion. It can show identity and demographic fields, CFN, booking number and officer, booking time, arrest agency and time, charges, disposition, bond, warrant data, and a mugshot control when populated. For release verification, three fields carry the most weight.

A displayed row is historical. It does not rule out a later arrest. Likewise, a current roster miss can reflect a transfer, spelling mismatch, delayed data, or no Johnson County booking. Use the event fields instead of treating absence as proof.
Request Central Booking Records
For a record outside the visible daily window, ask narrowly for the existing booking and release or custody-event record. Give the full name, approximate booking date, and booking number or CFN when known. Request the release date and time, type or authority, location, and receiving agency if the exit may have been a transfer. A focused request helps the custodian locate the right event without being asked to create a new narrative.
The Sheriff lists no printed-report charge for the first five pages and $0.35 per page after that. Staff search, review, and redaction time is charged at the employee’s hourly rate. Payment is due in advance. These published terms do not promise that every record is available or that every request will be completed in three days. Kansas law calls for a response by the end of the third business day when immediate access is unavailable, with a reason for delay and an expected date.
Johnson County Bond Release Timing
Johnson County publishes cash-surety, personal recognizance, and ORCD as common District Court bond categories. ORCD uses a ten-percent cash amount. Municipal cash bonds for Lenexa, Olathe, and Overland Park must be posted with the city, then the receipt returns to the jail process. That added step matters when a family expects immediate release.
The Sheriff warns that bonding and release can take several hours. Payment time, a receipt, or a signed order is therefore not the release timestamp. Processing, identity checks, other cases, and holds may intervene. Confirm the completed event in the Sheriff report or by direct facility contact. If the report shows a transfer rather than a community exit, follow the receiving authority.
